Shaanxi Institute of Zoology (Northwest Institute of Endangered Zoological Species)
Established in 1978, the institute is based on the original Shaanxi Institute of Biology and the SAS Survey Team for Qinling Biological Resources.
Research is undertaken in such labs as rare and endangered animals, economic animals raising and breeding, insects and an experimental based on animals, are also part of the institute.
Major research is centered on animal taxonomy, ecogeogrophy, physiochemistry, genetic breeding, and animal domestication. Quite a few achievements have been recently made concerning ecology for endangered zoological species, ecological features of economic animals and their resources utilization, crop pests control by way of natural enemies, and integrated use of animal resources.
Several joint surveys, with scientists from USA, Japan and Canada, have been carried out such endangered species as snow leopard, white-lipped deer and giant pandas. A wider range of such academic exchanges and joint research is expected in the years to come.
